Reader Comments on Obesity and its Causes

These readers wrote with good suggestions for further evaluation of the woman with worsening obesity mentioned in an earlier column.

1. I read with interest the letter and your response to the woman concerned about her sister's obesity. I was glad to see you mention polycystic ovary syndrome in passing, but so many red flags went up that indicated this disorder, that I wondered if you considered personally responding to encourage the reader to have her sister get a thorough evaluation for POS. So many women with this disease slip through the cracks until more severe complications arise.

2. I read with interest the question from a woman asking about her overweight sister. I am thankful that you suggested she see an endocrinologist. Her story sounds very similar to mine; I am an RN who ended up diagnosing myself with Cushing's syndrome (pituitary tumor) after years of being brushed aside by doctors. If a note can be sent along to this woman, I would highly recommend a blood test to check her cortisol level.

Thank you both for your concern. I'm hopeful that the reader will see your comments.
